CONTEMPORARY
ARTEMIS 20 WILL TURN HEADS AT SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW
In November 2005 the team at Chichester based
Vizual Marine came up with an idea to create a benchmark racing yacht of around
20' which could be sailed by both able and disabled sailors alike; with the
characteristics of a contemporary Americas Cup (AC) boat.
There is little doubt that the AC characteristics
on this design are clear to see from a styling perspective and with its high
stability and control due to its 225kg bulb and high efficiency appendages,
this boat is a joy to sail. This yacht has been built to the highest
specification and utilised the latest in material technologies.
Vizual MarinesÕ Dave Rutter explains
ÒWith a tandem seating arrangement on a set of
rails that allows forward and aft movement, the sailors in the Artemis 20 can
move their position to balance the boat. The seats have slots for weight
correctors so all boats are racing on a minimal weight as set by the one design
class rules. The seating plan also has a canting system which assists the crew
to remain level although the boat could be heeling over.Ó
Both helm and crew have the option to control the
boat with a twin joystick system, added with reefing points for the main and a
furling jib. The central cockpit dashboard ensures all lines are within easy
reach and the mainsheet can be adjusted for helm or crew use.
Vizual Marine has secured sponsorship from
Artemis Ocean Racing, also sponsors of Brian Thompson and his Artemis 60
project. Artemis is one of the UKÕs leading investment companies.
Mark Tyndall from Artemis comments,
"We
are delighted to be title sponsor of the innovative Artemis 20
project from Vizual Marine. We believe that a 6 metre carbon fibre performance
keelboat like this one, designed with both able and disabled sailors in mind,
creates an even keel for anyone wanting to enjoy the sport of sailing. I think
we can achieve great things with this boat and we are looking forward to
seeing the Artemis 20 fleet develop into a prolific class of its own with
international recognition."
Dave Rutter sums up,
ÒThis design is unique to the market place. The
Artemis 20 had to stand out amongst a crowd. There are no 6M carbon keelboats
or Dinghies with any
of our characteristics making the Artemis 20 very unique.Ó
